Semester 2 : Shadow & tonal values

Here it is evident that the artist has observed the scene very carefully and managed to get the sense of strong realism into their drawing. They have done this by focusing a lot on the shading to get the different variations of light and shadow which helps give a lot the objects in the scene a third dimensional feel which is the primary factor in the realistic effect in the piece. There are several examples of this, such as the tops of the windows/doorways in the walls to both the left and right of the scene.
The artist included the fact that the light from above doesn’t shine in them areas hence the shadows being cast. Moreover on the windows there is also a cast shadow included in the railings on them which is a small but great inclusion for that aspect of realism. On the opposite end of the tone the artist has also highlighted certain areas where it is lightest to help balance out all of the tonal values evenly within the piece. These areas are the sheet and the man’s clothing in the centre and even the subtle highlights in the glass reflection on the main railing.
